Getting away from the debate over ethics vs etiquette, I like your definition of etiquette and I also remember as a kid having the need for manners being relentlessly mentioned and demonstrated by my parents. I've now done the same thing to my kids. Good manners are just the right thing to do.

It's "abrasive" because it's phonily, contrivedly absolutist--and every hand is dealt from a stacked deck. The heroes are demi-gods and the villains are scum. “I hope you will not have cause to regret your decision, Mr. Rearden,” is worthy of Auric Goldfinger (BOND: Do you expect me to talk? GOLDFINGER: No, Mister Bond. I expect you to DIE.) It's crap-thriller and bodice-ripper writing, in a novel that claims to trumpet the truth about "man" and "reality."

To read a more fun critique, spring for 99 cents and read my parody. Having read the original (twice!), you're in a perfect position to derive the maximum laffs from it. It shows what happens to Dragnie Tagbord and John Glatt and the others are up to, ten years later, in the "secret sequel."

I suppose what bothered me most about Ayn Rand (when I first read the book and now) is that I agree with a lot of her ideas but she seems to show such apparent contempt for people who disagree with her. Of course sometimes, as Gordon mentioned, intense focus can be mistaken for coldness.

Understandable considering her background, but she certainly could have been more persuasive if she had chosen a different style. She gave the impression that it wasn't worth the time and energy to be persuasive because people who disagreed with her were not worthy of the time and energy to try to talk to.

That said, I thought the movie was timely, and reading the book again is showing some definite parallels with issues today!

"In the event of an emergency (something you MUST handle over the cell phone) stop what you’re doing. Get out of line at the store, pull over to the side of the road, excuse yourself from the table or the conversation, and handle the emergency."

I wish more people would see that they need to withdraw from the line in the store, get off the road or not continue to set/stand in a group of people to talk on the cell phone at any time.

I don't like being included in all the conversations when it is none of my business or I don't want to know all the little details, but it gets out there to the whole group. There is a time and place.... usually not with a bunch of other people around.

Thanks for the post.

No kidding! How does that happen? Do these things work or do they have enough other factors going for them that they can get away with some bad management?

The amazing thing is that some companies who exercise this kind of short-sighted policy still manage to be successful.

Halloween parties are one of the exciting events in the year. You can see people wear different costumes- funny or scary ones. Last year, I was able to attend the family's Halloween party and I wore a pumpkin costume and my relatives told me that I have a nice costume. I was really flattered because it was me who made the costume.

I often use handwritten notes for congratulatory, greetings, and other personal messages, and I think they are a great tool to send across a quick, crisp and personal message. But I'd find it odd and maybe a tad unprofessional to receive a hand written phone number from a professional I'd just met at a conference. I wonder why didn't anyone else think so!
