These people write business books? You've got to be kidding!

Press Release

January 20, 2002

A leather-clad couple on a Harley-Davidson may be the last people you'd expect to be giving advice on surviving in corporate America. But it's a great metaphor of how business has changed in the last 10 years.

No longer is the corporate world ruled by people who work 60-hour work weeks, worship at the altars of charismatic CEOs, have no connection with their families and have never been seen in public out of a three-piece suit. Recent corporate scandals and rounds of layoffs have left executives pursuing authenticity, depth, and actual contribution.

It doesn't get any more real than this.

It's All About the Journey - Finding Peace, Success and Fulfillment in the Corporate World begins with an accessible metaphor of motorcycle touring. The comparison is an apt one. "Bikers," as well as business people, must know their equipment and the routes they intend to take, and put in a great deal of preparation and attention to detail. But plans are subject to change as weather, road conditions, and other drivers and riders play their roles. "Posers" can buy expensive bikes and expensive clothes, but until they learn the basics of mechanics, navigation, and road etiquette, they get nowhere.

This book is about the nuts and bolts of being in business, the actualities and practicalities of capitalism, about making real and quantifiable contributions to your company and community, and about enjoying the journey. In a contradiction with the majority of books on the market, it's not being "magically transported" to success, but about the long, slow, real journey of practically addressing each opportunity and obstacle along the way.

The book is organized into 26 "Opportunities," or business challenges, with appropriate "Solutions," or discussions of how to go about addressing the issues head-on. Examples of topics addressed include:

  • Managing Innovation in Organizations - A Framework for Creativity and Collaboration
  • Effective Workforce Management - Gaining the Competitive Advantage
  • Making Good Kills - Stopping Projects, Quitting Jobs, Firing Employees and Other Necessary Endings
  • Strategy Drivers for International and Global Business - Technology
  • GAAP - A Primer of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Mergers and Acquisitions - Change Without Damage
